Misoprostol can be used to help complete a partial miscarriage, induce a medical abortion with a doctor's involvement, or induce abortion without professional help.

When available, Misoprostol is often paired with mifepristone or methotrexate, which successfully induces abortion about 95% of the time. However, it is also effective about 88% of the time on its own. If the first attempt fails, it can be tried again after several days.
